Radicitus (2018)

adverb, 1. by the roots. 2. utterly, completely, radically

CERAMIC, WOOD, TWINE, NAIL, PLANTS, SOIL

APPROX. 72” x 60” x 24”

A ceramic installation created from the extruded products of a single form. The form was inspired by the reproductive process mitosis all biological forms undergo. The ceramic pieces take on multiple meanings: both as suggestive, but ultimately mimetic , forms evoking roots, bones, and limbs, but also as real shelter for living plant roots. The installation Radicitus thus simultaneously exists as both simulacrum and bona fide original, although the quality of “natural” is overturned by the installation’s placement in a sterile gallery.

The installation is composed of 6 individual ceramic forms produced by the same process of extruding clay through a mold. The forms are presented on stepping plinths, each horizontally arranged piece matched with a wall-mounted counterpart.
