VIS MAJOR

120” x 34” x 60” (90” PEAK)

Growing up in Houston, Texas, I have lived through many major hurricane and flood events, some of which have led to the mass destruction of my city. This piece is inspired in part by the “creations” left behind after such catastrophes, as the built and natural environment alike are crushed together by the powerful forces of nature. Vis Major borrows from the visual language of the ad hoc constructions created by both nature and survivors as debris and flotsam is reckoned with. Held together only by the interlocking pieces of its body and string, the piece is situated in the fragile stability after the storm.

Vis Major was installed in the Gidwitz Lobby of the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts.
